Word has come down that season six, which will air later this year in the United Kingdom before airing on PBS in the States in January 2016, will be the final season of Downton Abbey.

I started watching Downton Abbey in early 2013, when the first season was ‘live’ in the US. Amidst other popular shows of the time, Downton Abbey succeeded in reminding TV fans that gore and sex aren’t the only ways to our hearts—a great story can do just as much to captivate.

While it will be somewhat bittersweet to say goodbye to these characters, the timing seems fitting. Ever since major characters exited the show, the plot has become rather dry and tired.

Having followed a few TV series from inception to finale,[1] it is comical to note just how often the final season of a show sucks compared to the previous seasons. This can be attributed to many things. But, generally, this is due to the lack of excitement on both the part of the cast, and the writers/producers. Maybe ending Downton Abbey in this planned and deliberate manner will ensure a proper sendoff, perhaps one that even the biggest of fans will appreciate?
